My Views On Recycling My Wardrobe

by Claire Chanelle

You may recognize this outfit from my previous post but if you paid attention you will see that it’s a different white top and I am wearing heels today. Click here to see how I wore pretty much the same look and then come back to compare the two looks. This way you will see a perfect example of “how I recycle my wardrobe.”

I love wearing the same look but changing it up with the smallest detail such as swapping flats for heels or a silk camisole for a long sleeved blouse. If you love an outfit or feel comfortable in something so be it. We need to loosen our minds and stop thinking that it is shameful to re wear the same outfits over and over again. By the end of this post I would like you to go away with that thought but also find a solution to suiting our generation of fast fashion and social media. Let’s face it, we do have social media, most of us care what people think or we are simply set in our ways. I am here to remind you of a few tricks to ensure you recycle your wardrobe.

I am not referring to selling items to re buy new items.

I often hear the phase “recycle your wardrobe” and then I go on to hear that selling a bag to re buy another one is recycling. I kinda get this to a certain degree, you definitely save money. However you are still not re wearing items and going through the thought process of wearing something a few times. If you watch my handbag video here you can see that I have over 45 designer bags, this is because I keep and re wear things. Of course lots of other factors go into my bag collection but my point is I buy with a sensible thought process and tend to keep what I invest in. When I use the word “invest” it doesn’t always mean I am investing my money to make more, it means it’s an investment staple piece that will be worth the money because I have worn it so much. It’s not always about the resale value.

Who remembers the days when Facebook didn’t exist and we could actually wear the same outfit over an over again? When I was younger I would wear an outfit one weekend and then again the following weekend if the group was different; how would anyone know what I wore last week? This all changed when social media entered our lives. I love it that I grew up without social media, I actually grew up without the internet in my early schools days. If you are the younger generation it’s not all bad as social media brings us all so much opportunity and creativity.

TOP TIPS FOR RECYCLING

  • SHOP WITH A SENSIBLE MIND SET. DON’T JUST BUY SOMETHING YOU INTEND TO WEAR ONCE. If you miss this vital start you will never learn how to recycle.
  • YOU CAN BE AS ECLECTIC AS YOU LIKE, YOU CAN EVEN HAVE MORE THAN ONE STYLE BUT WHEN BUYING ONE STYLE TRY TO WORK AROUND A CAPSULE COLLECTION.  THIS WAY YOU CAN MIX AND MATCH EVERYTHING.
  • IF YOU LOOK AN OUTFIT WEAR IT AGAIN AND AGAIN. WHO CARES IF “SUSAN” WHO FOLLOWS YOU ON INSTAGRAM THINKS WORSE OF YOU BECAUSE OF THIS. I BET “SUSAN” WILL TAKE A LEAF OUT OF YOUR BOOK.
  • WEAR THAT OUTFIT YOU LOVED LAST WEEK BUT MIX IT UP A BIT. SEEING AS YOU NOW BUY IN A CAPSULE WARDROBE STYLE, THIS SHOULDN’T BE A PROBLEM.
  • OF COURSE SELLING TO RE BUY NEW ITEMS DOES HELP AND DOES COUNT.

I guess what I am trying to say is lets not forget those days where it was okay to wear the same looks over and over again.  We play around with the look and make it look a little different each time. I am still working on that cost per wear for my Balenciaga jacket too!

The Instgram Cami Frenzy

I am sure you have all seen your Instagram account riddled with silk camisoles? I personally adore this style and trend. It suits most people, you can wear it day or night, style it totally different ways and you can pick up the most stunning styles for high street prices.

My problem is this camisoles do not flatter my problem area (that I feel I have) which is my arms. We all have parts of our body we prefer and dislike and my arms are one of them. I am not saying I am fat or my arms are too big that is not what this is about, it’s about knowing what feels comfortable to wear and wearing clothes that are flattering.

I was determined to wear one this summer and found away around it. It was as simple as wearing one with a baggy jacket that I could slouch over my arms. The other way to style a cami is to wear a light weight sheer duster jacket; these also look good slouched over the shoulder.

It’s important to wear what flatters you but always try to find a way to make a style suit you if you love it. There is usually a way and I refused to surrender to my cami fear.

Did I succeed?

Day Time Heels

I have made it my mission this season to find day time summer heels. I know exactly what brands and styles to buy for evening heels, would you like to know more about that? If yes in a video style or blog post?

This summer I have been so happy about the fact I have been wearing heels during the day, it’s actually a hard task to take on. After trying and testing lots of brands and styles I have found a few I love…..

Great post. I was looking at the new Balmain tartan tweed blazer, which I and thought is so distinctive it would be hard to wear over and over to justify the outlay. But you’re absolutely right, that by changing things up just a little, a piece can be worn in different ways. And yes, who cares if anyone has thoughts/comments about that. If I love it, so what?
You are so creative in the way you put outfits together and don’t follow the crowd as many other bloggers do. You look amazing in this post. I love the look from the taxi driver in your sexy off the shoulder shot.
Plus a “bonus photo” More of those please. x

I feel the same way! When I was younger I thought it was awful if I was caught in the same things too many times. Now that I’ve gotten older, I feel like it’s silly to not wear the items I purchased multiple times. I worked hard for the money and I get so much satisfaction out of wearing it 🙂

I very much agree with the whole recycling thing. I have so much even from my mums wadrobe(vintage.) just taking an old piece and adding to a modern outfit. People asking “I love that, where is it from.” The answer is normally “I actually don’t know.” or “It’s from a brand but it’s at least a year old.”
Love this blogpost.

Excellent! I pretty much have always had the same style. I know what suits me and I wear it. I have had some shirts for three and four years. I don’t care if people are tired of seeing them. I love them, they are comfortable and they look good on me.

Absolutely lover your style. I have changed how I see and wear things since following you. Love the Balenziaga Denim Jacket with shoulder pads and as I my budget won’t stretch to that one, I found a cheaper alternative on ASOS, which I’m loving and living in it at the moment dressed up with a Chanel brooch…..Always look forward to your reveals and unboxing’s to see what’s new. I find as i’m getting older, i’m getting more daring too and a bit more quirky with my tastes (i’ve always loved tailoring/Alexander McQueen/Vivienne Westwood) and feel more confident to take a few risks with my outfits; thanks to you!! xx

Don’t know why, but my spelling of Balenciaga has changed on it’s own and I “love” your style not “lover”……ha ha
